Iqony starts wind measurements

Analysis indicates the potential yield from the planned Mosbach wind farm

Mosbach/Saarbrücken/Essen. The Mosbach wind farm project is taking a further step: a wind measurement campaign will be carried out to determine the potential yield on the forestry land in the Michelherd district to the north of Lohrbach, owned by the Schönau Foundation and the town of Mosbach.

Wind measurements are an important milestone in the planning process for a wind farm or even a single wind turbine. The data collected is used as input for the yield assessment and ultimately provides information on the amount of green electricity that can be generated. 

As a rule, a wind measurement campaign takes a year so that all seasonal characteristics can be included in the analysis. The results of the measurement enable the locations of the wind turbines within a planning area to be selected in such a way that they provide the best possible yield under the local wind conditions to be expected.

If local conditions make it necessary, several measurements may be required at different points in the terrain. This is the case, for example, if the planned installation area has significant differences in height, i.e. an uneven topographical profile. 

Measuring instruments are being installed

Now that the appointed metrological institute has selected the locations where the measurement equipment is to be deployed, the installation of the measuring instruments will begin in the coming days. “We are relying on the latest technology to achieve the best possible results,” says Dennis Nilles, who is responsible for the Mosbach Wind Farm project at Iqony. “The implementation of the measurement campaign is in the hands of an independent and experienced service provider who ensures that the measurement technology is set up and operated in accordance with the applicable guidelines.”

The special care with which Iqony is approaching the implementation of the wind measurement campaign also includes the fact that the measuring instruments are supplied with energy with almost no emissions during their operation: “The energy with which the systems are supplied in the field comes from solar cells with batteries as intermediate storage and fuel cells for support, so that almost no CO2 is emitted,” Dennis Nilles explains.

Economic benefit for the local communities

The local communities will also benefit from the wind measurement campaign, as it will help to optimize the expected future energy yield of the planned turbines. “On the one hand, the amount of rent we pay to the landowners depends on the revenue generated by the turbines. On the other hand, a fixed amount of money for each kilowatt hour generated will also go to the local authorities,” says Dennis Nilles.

The locations of the measuring systems in the area of the planned Mosbach wind farm will be fenced off for safety reasons. Information on the wind measurement campaign will be displayed at all locations for the benefit of people out walking.
